A partir del siglo XIII, es común encontrar a los fantasmas representados cubiertos por una sábana.
En concreto, un sudario, la mortaja en la que se envuelve el cadáver para el sepulcro.
Antes de esa fecha solían aparecer demacrados y cargando cadenas y grilletes pero sin sábana.
En el siglo I, Plinio el Joven describió así a un fantasma:
«En el silencio de la noche se oía un ruido […] A continuación aparecía una imagen, un anciano consumido por la flacura y la podredumbre, de larga barba y cabello erizado; grilletes en los pies y cadenas en las manos…».
En esa época, les preocupaba reflejar las ataduras que les retenían aquí. Esas malas acciones y pesares que les hacían no poder marchar al más allá o que les obligaban a regresar de él.
Ahora, parece ser que la tendencia es que se aparezcan con su indumentaria habitual.
