2 años después de pedir perdón por los terribles experimentos secretos con radiación, el día 16 de mayo de 1997, Clinton saldría de nuevo a disculparse. Esta vez por «el más largo experimento NO terapéutico llevado a cabo por la sanidad pública».
40 años dejando morir de sífilis a afroamericanos sin darles tratamiento contra la enfermedad.
Los sujetos, de nuevo, no habían dado su consentimiento médico informado. Recibieron un diagnóstico muy vago sobre lo que les sucedía y les animaron a participar en el estudio recibiendo, así, ‘tratamiento’ médico gratuito — placebos—, comidas y seguro de sepelio, si fallecían.
En 1932, momento en el que se comenzó el experimento, ya existían tratamientos para la sífilis. Sin embargo, eran muy tóxicos, peligrosos y existían dudas sobre su efectividad. Por ello, los científicos decidieron hacer 1 estudio en el que conocer todas las fases de la enfermedad.
Para ello, seleccionaron 600 varones afroamericanos, 399 infectados ya por la sífilis, con la intención de estudiar durante 40 años el avance de la enfermedad durante todo el proceso, llegando hasta la muerte.
En 1947, la sífilis ya era tratada con penicilina. Sin embargo, en vez de administrar a los pacientes esta medicina y concluir o redirigir el estudio, este se mantuvo, indicando a los «pacientes» que no se tratasen con penicilina.
Solo 1 filtración a la prensa en 1972 les detuvo.
Las consecuencias de este experimento, el experimento Tuskegee, en cifras:
De los 399 sujetos, 28 murieron de sífilis y 100 tuvieron graves complicaciones médicas por el experimento.
40 de sus esposas contrajeron la enfermedad y 19 de sus hijos nacieron con sífilis.
Esta es la dura realidad.
Aunque resulte difícil de aceptar, todo esto sucedió no hace tanto tiempo.
Científicos y gobernantes se aprovecharon de la confianza depositada en ellos.
